As I mentioned last week, Liverpool are in dire straights financially after recording massive losses of £54.9 million last season, face a net debt of £351 million and did not even qualify for the Champions League another massive hit to their wallet. Therefore Torres - who is the club's most valuable commodity - probably must be sold off to the highest bidder and Chelsea appear willing to offer an exorbitant package to get their man probably some time in the next week or two.
At first whisper the deal appears to be for £40 plus three players from a select group on the Chelsea roster valued at £15 a player. Some of those players might include Anelka, Deco, Kalou, Carvalho, or potentially Paulo Ferreira. That would take the deal to £85 and eclipse Real Madrid's transfer of £80 for Ronaldo last summer.
Of course Manchester city, Barcelona, and Real Madrid could all be in the mix for Torres as well eventually. City may in fact be able to offer up the most money and a select group of players as well, but Torres has long said he only wishes to play for a team that is already in the Champions League.
Should City successfully outmaneuver the other clubs for Torres' services, I would imagine they would easily qualify for the Champions League next season after just narrowly missing out this past campaign and they probably will do so anyways with the other players they will probably buy this offseason. But it may be too late, the loss to Tottenham may spoiled their chances to get one of the top 2 or 3 forwards in the world.
Regardless, Torres is likely to move and it will be very interesting to see where he goes because depending on what team he moves to that should send the rest of the transfer market into motion as other teams try to react and reload.
