"USA USA You Must Stay"

On one side of town Liverpool fans cannot get rid of their American owners fast enough holding daily protests to plead with George Gillette and Tom Hicks to sell the club and return stateside.

For the other club that makes up the second half of the Merseyside derby, Everton fans have been pleading with management and anyone that will listen to keep their American in town as long as possible.

Coming on with 20 minutes to go in the match with Hull City yesterday afternoon to chants of "USA USA You Must Stay," Landon Donovan only further fired up his home-side fans with his second Premier League goal - a cracking volley - and an assist in the Toffees 5-1 thrashing of Jozy Altidore's Hull City.

Everton manager David Moyes said two days ago the team is keen to extend Donovan's 10-week loan to the end of the season. However, Bruce Arena the manager of the LA Galaxy Donovan's domestic team - have adopted a strong opposition and are adamant that Donovan will return home on March 15 unless the labor dispute stops the league from opening on March 27.

No matter how this situation plays out, Donovan's venture to England has been by far his best spell in Europe and perhaps the best stretch of his career. With the anticipated summer of departure of Joe Cole, who will be out of contract at Chelsea, to Manchester United via a free transfer - the hot rumor right now is that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich wants Donovan and that boss Carlo Ancelotti has been so impressed with the American that he is setting up a 10,000,000 pound transfer for him to replace Cole as the Chelsea's starting outside middy.

That could be the best thing to expose American soccer to world football since the U.S. shocked Spain last summer.
