Lionel Messi: best player in the world according to ESPN

In American sports culture or at least from the blowhards congregating in Bristol, CT, everything can be boiled down to a list.

The Coors Light hot seat, five burning question, who's hot now? These are all ill-fated ploys by Sportscenter to not present information but simply have talking heads yell back and forth at each other. Isn't America great?

This isn't an anti-ESPN post (too easy and played out at this point; I'll leave that to Deadspin) but I just thought it deserved an introduction since today ESPN Soccernet posted its top 50 players in the world.

At first glance it's a solid list with a top 5 of Messi, Ronaldo, Rooney, Kaka and Xavi.

It's an interesting debate and one that I've been thinking about lately, not in so much excruciating detail but rather, who's the best in the world at this second?

For my money, I'd say Rooney but I would admit that I don't pay enough attention to Barcelona (other than the Champions League). For this reason, the EPL is my bread and butter while all other leagues are secondary, fair or not.

  1. Rooney is having a superb season but you really have to watch more of La Liga to see just how great Messi really is. And that's not to mention Ronaldo - who many - including Sir Alex Ferguson - still rate as the best.
