Goal of the Week, and a few other highlights

The panties were dropping all over Bavaria in Germany Tuesday night after Arjen Robben sent Bayern Munich fans into pure bliss with a strike that will be a worthy goal-of-the-year candidate. The Dutchman, who is often criticized for being too selfish on the ball, took the responsibility of sending Munich through to the Champions League quarterfinals on his own back. After Fiorentina had broken the deadlock in the aggregate at 4-3, Robben tied the score back up in the 65th minute with a strike for the ages, and gave Munich two away goals as opposed to Fiorentina's one - which was good enough to send BM through.

If you are also like Rich and myself you enjoyed England's latest show of dominance over the rest of the world as well.

Yesterday Wayne Rooney showed why I continue to believe him to be only behind Ronaldo as the greatest footballer in the world - right now. The guy is red hot for the Red Devils scoring two goals to take his season total to 30 for Man U and 35 in all competitions. It was really a virtuoso performance by United in general crushing one of the Italian giants AC Milan 4-0 and 7-2 overall on aggregate.

On Tuesday, Arsenal entered the match with a little bit of adversity missing their best player Cesc Fabregas and down 2-1 after the first leg with Porto. If you're an Arsenal fan like myselfyou know that one of the Gunners lack a world class goalie - as illustrated by Fabianski's bozo of the week performance in the first leg - and a world class front line forward - a major reason why the team has not won any trophies in going on five years now.

If you've also ever had the pleasure to travel over to London to watch an Arsenal game in a pub or go to a game like I did last year, you would have had the enjoyment of sharing in the collective pool of frustration with Nicolas Bendtner. I was at a pub during last season's first Man U v Arsenal match, which Arsenal won 2-1, but two guys in the bar kept ripping on the guy with comments like "Aw fuckin Bendtner, your fuckin awful" and a few other choice phrases coupled with a British accent which had me and my brother on the floor dying laughing. However, Bendtner delivered the best game of his career with a hat trick against Porto as Arsenal stomped on Porto 5-0 to send the Portuguese team packing.

However, the goal of the match came from Frenchman Samir Nasri, who dribbled through three Porto defenders on the right side of the box then sent a rocket off the far post at nearly an impossible angle to score Arsenal's third goal of the match really deflating any chance of a Porto comeback.
