Miracles do come true: Cabanas still may play in World Cup

Colombian international defender Andres Escobar tragic shooting death in Medellin after the 1994 World Cup was perhaps the biggest illustration of the often violent fanatical nature of world football's fan. Although it is unclear if the motive involving his murder was solely based on the fact the defender caused an own goal against the U.S. in the group stage that cost Colombia a place in the knock-out round, it is certainly one of the biggest theories.

In what was a scary reminder of that side of the sport just over a week ago the star for World Cup qualified Paraguay forward Salvador Cabanas was shot in the head in a bathroom at a bar in Mexico City - the city of his club team America.

Although Cabanas was conscious and somewhat alert after being shot, the forward had to undergo surgery and was only given a 20 percent chance to live let alone make a full recovery.

Miraculously it appears the forward is on the road to returning to football and playing for Paraguay in the World Cup even though his surgeons were unable to remove the bullet.

Doctors have said Cabanas is conscious and able to move his limbs, but is suffering some amnesia. And a neurosurgeon from Paraguay believes the 29-year-old can be ready for the world cup.
