The FIFA world rankings aren't exactly the BCS standings for college football, meaning they're not very important but still it's interesting to check them out from time to time to see how the United States and the superpowers around the world are doing.
In the latest rankings released yesterday, the top 5 was: Spain, Brazil, Netherlands, Italy and Portugal.
On the strength of its third straight African Cup win, Egypt jumped 14 spots to No. 10-its highest ranking ever.
The United States remains at No. 14, the highest CONCACAF team, just ahead of Mexico (No. 17).
Barring major injuries or unexpected results in the final tuneups before the World Cup begins, the rankings should generally stay about the same. They don't really have any value, unless you're obsessed with the beautiful game or you're a degenerate gambler looking for an edge (and aren't they always?).
