Dunga fired as Brazil coach
Well that didn't take long.
Two days after Brazil lost 2-1 to Netherlands in the 2010 World Cup quarterfinals, Brazil's head coach Dunga and his staff were all let go.
As far as I know, he's the first coach to be let go (as opposed to resigning or retiring) following an early exit in the 2010 World Cup. In qualifying before the tournament began, there were whispers that Dunga's defensive style wasn't flying with the soccer-crazy homeland. Plus as Shimer said yesterday, South American teams have a peculiar habit (fact, not opinion) of folding when they face some real adversity.
Brazil finally met a similarly great team (Netherlands) and they could never recover after Sneijder's first goal (which was credited to him in a scoring change) and the ridiculous red card by Melo. Brazil will be the favorites in 2014, regardless who is patrolling their sidelines, mostly because they'll be hosting the World Cup. Still, it'll be 12 years and counting by then since they've won a World Cup title and for a powerhouse like Brazil that can seem like a lifetime.
Side note: There are only four games left in the 2010 World Cup, depressing I know. Anyways check back here before Tuesday's Uruguay-Netherlands match and Wednesday's Germany-Spain match, we'll have previews of both games along with fearless predictions and what to watch for. Then we'll get you set for Saturday's third-place game and Sunday's final.
