As I've reiterated time and again, I hate Mexico but even I will admit that they deserved to advance from Group A, not host South Africa.
South Africa will now have to live with the fact that they were the first host not to make it to the knockout stage. It's not as bad as it sounds though since they picked up a win and a tie but their goal differential (-1) was not good enough to top Mexico (+2).
Overall, the tournament has been a great success for South Africa despite their team's disappointing exit. It's the first time the World Cup has been held in Africa and while there were plenty of worries before it all started, things seem to be running smoothly.
This was also a team that was one of the lowest ranked in the 32-team field so again, this is not shocking that they didn't make it. Plus, their group was tougher than expected. France choked as I just said but Uruguay is way better than anyone thought and Mexico is solid as usual.
South Africa
Best moment: The opening game, a tie vs. Mexico showed that the hosts weren't a joke.
Worst moment: Not making it through the first round, an infamous mark that they'll live with for a long time.
Best result: 2-1 win over France although they needed more. It was still a valiant effort and they could have scored a few additional goals (post, tough saves).
Worst result: The 3-0 loss to Uruguay ended up sealing their fate with the goal differential.
Final tally: Three goals scored, five allowed.
Best player: midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala. Made a name for himself with a goal and an assist. His goal, which occurred in the first match, has been my favorite one so far of the tournament: an absolute screamer in the top corner from well outside the box.
Worst player: midfielder Steven Pienaar. As South Africa's best player, the Everton man needed a much better showing. I don't know if it's his fault or the coach's for putting him slightly out of position in a more defensive role but he finished the three games with zero points.
