Great day for Germany

And the worst loss in English World Cup history is complete. Germany wins 4-1 and heads to the 2010 quarterfinals to face either Argentina or Mexico next Saturday at 10 a.m.

I'm happy that the Lampard goal/no-goal is a moot point. Shimer will be writing more about it later but something needs to be done about the lack of replay.

The Germans fully deserved to win; they're so efficient and they have the best counterattack. They always deliver on the big stage and Neuer made a couple nice stops. It wasn't a good game by David James although it probably didn't matter.

And the story remains the same for the English, their team is still not nearly as good as the sum of their parts. It doesn't matter what coach they bring in, they can't get over the hump. And the streak goes on, they haven't won a World Cup since 1966.

Final stats:

7 Fouls 6
4 Corner Kicks 6
4 Offsides 2
45% Time of Possession 55%
1 Yellow Cards 1
0 Red Cards 0
6 Saves 2
