Sorry for the lack of posts over the weekend. Shimer's laptop broke (he's got a new one on the way) and I was in Upstate NY for my cousin's wedding.
Other than the first half of Ivory Coast-Brazil and New Zealand-Italy, I didn't see any action this weekend. The good news is that I'm back home and it couldn't be at a better time now that Group A is wrapping up this morning.
Uruguay leads Mexico 1-0 at the half and South Africa leads 10-men France 2-0. They had the longest odds to get to the second round from this Group before today's matches started but if Uruguay scores another goal and South Africa adds another then they go through and not Mexico.
All three goals so far today have been on headers: Uruguay's Luis Suarez scored in the 43rd minute off a perfect cross from Edinson Cavani. For South Africa, Bongani Khumalo headed a corner from Siphiwe Tshabalala in the 20th minute. Then Katlego Mphela made it 2-0 in the 37th minute with another header.
French forward Yohan Gourcoff received a red card in the 25th minute so his pathetic team is playing a man down for the rest of the game. We'll have more on the French meltdown later when they're officially elminated but their tournament has been just a complete disaster.
